Highlighting ROAM Gallery Artist
M,A. Gingras - Painter
One description of what outsider art is states “Art produced by artists without formal training, especially by ones who work in an idiosyncratic style and are relatively isolated from mainstream artistic trends”. I believe that my style and work fit this description quite nicely. I am mostly self-taught and love colour. My work is influenced by so many things, window displays, thrift store goodies, packaging, tattoos, Jail house art, voodoo, pop culture, Blues and Jazz music too Thank you Thelonious Monk. I have always painted to make things look the way I wish they looked in the “real” world. And it helps me to get lost for a few hours. Giving my loved ones a much needed break from my lunacy. I enjoy the challenge of putting the image in my head successfully on canvas and working out how to do it. Once the idea is whole I head straight to the canvas with lots and lots of colour, it doesn’t always work out as planed of course, but, when it does, it is a thing of beauty. I paint because it brings me a lot of joy and provides me with a lot of peace and happiness. |
