Highlighting ROAM Gallery Artist

Lori McCrory - Painter

I'm from Michigan and work primarily in mixed media, the more "mixed" the better! I've been making this kind of collage statement for years, ever since I was little and specialized in dioramas- while other kids' moms agonized over helping their children make those things for school projects and the like, I couldn't wait to get involved. This lead to a general love of art and formed my life in that realm.

My influences include a huge admiration of Andy Warhol and Peter Max (who along with being icons, experts at the use of color), Corita Kent (graphic fonts as art), Marc Chagall (use of animal and bird life as metaphors and beauty), Roy Lichtenstein (Pop sensibility), as well as musician/artists like Vanessa Briscoe Hay, Brandon Boyd, Beck and Richard Barone.
Music and art are generally intertwined vines!

This series is called "Irruptive Birds". I'm a bird nerd and was fascinated when reading several articles of how this winter certain species of birds have been seen in some very unusual places, areas they don't normally congregate or migrate to. These accounts were rightfully hyped "Amazing Sightings!" "Once In a Lifetime!" "Never Seen In This Area!" , etc. So, I decided to make the art around these nonchalant birds that are flipping everyone out. I desaturated color photos, then hand-colored over each bird with black, white, and grey charcoal pencil. After that I gave each one a beak color (orange or pink) and then sprayed all with fixative. Next I came up with four minimalist backgrounds on canvas, all opposite of one another. When affixing the birds I built them into a few layers using leveling wood dots to give some dimension. This involved doing one bird at a time and took a while, but to me the result was worth it!

"5 Mambo Suns" new art for Richard Barone featuring his signature pedal/effects unit. Influenced by the late 80's-early 90's MTV logos that included many situations and backdrops for said logos.

This was a fun but long project during the height of quarantine, staying focused and motivated was the biggest challenge. But glad I did!
