Zohra Waiz - Painter
Zohra Waiz is a nature and environmental artist, a zoologist and a social activist from Afghanistan, currently living in British Colombia. She joined art training courses when she was 16, later she had post-graduate degree in zoology.
She has been using art and play as tool to highlight the social issues and create awareness among Afghan Refugees residing in Pakistan. She believes in transformational power of arts. As she has background in science, she was able to create awareness about issues like global warming, importance of forestation, and effective use of land and water. She also raised awareness about social issues like women rights and child rights. She has been working for peaceful co-existence of Afghan Refugees and local residents of Pakistan using art as tool to bring youth together.
She has not only been participated in art exhibition but also initiated art based awareness campaigns especially for school students and community centers. In collaboration with UN Women and UNICEF in 2012, she carried out art exhibitions in schools in Pakistan to highlight the gender gap and role of women in the society. Beside that she translated the story books from Urdu language to Persian for Afghan children.
She moved to Canada in 2015. She has been participating in art exhibition across BC to raise fund for social and environmental causes. These days, Zohra is leading a charity organization “Canadian Philanthropic Association for Victims of War” and restarting her art carrier in her new home, Canada.
