Highlighting ROAM Gallery Artist
Tori Lockwood - Painter | Printmaker
I am a Thompson Rivers University Graduate with a Bachelors in Fine Arts. I have carved, painted, photographed, bleed, blistered and bruised my way through my six years at TRU. My preferred mediums are printmaking and painting along with photography. I was guided and inspired by my professors, classmates and the many artists I was exposed to during my time in Kamloops. During my time in school I focused primarily on my printmaking. Having taken all the painting classes in the first two and a half years, I branched out and discovered my love for prints. I spent my final two semesters labouring over three large scale lino prints that are approx 5X8 ft. The carvings took 3 months each to carve and that is with spending 12 hours a day craving; a labour of love that, once complete, my doctor advised me never to do again as I could hardly hold anything in my right hand due to nerve damage.
After my graduation I moved to New Westminster where I lived for two years. I focused mainly on photography as a way of taking a break from printmaking. I took photos, modeled for friends and embedded myself in the darkroom of a local photography studio. I ended up working there on weekends in order to continue to use the darkroom. I even had a small show at a restaurant in Surrey displaying my serie: The Forgotten. I eventually found my way back to painting and, once I moved to Port Coquitlam, I finally had the space and time to really dive into my art making once again. I have since been consumed by the process; creating a series of paintings entitled Art Speak. I have even begun to transform my kitchen into a silkscreen printing studio and with MANY trial and errors have successfully created a homemade light source for exposing my silkscreens. I Just recently finished my first print!
Through the years my art has changed and grown and continues to do so just as I have. What I learn in one area of my life transcends the boundaries and shows up where I least expect it. With all the excitement of a child I am looking forward to where my art will take me in the future.
