Highlighting ROAM Gallery Artist
Cindy Johnston | Maple Ridge, BC
I was born in Edmonton Alberta in 1962, but grew up in a small town in Northern Alberta; it is a place I often refers to as a “creative and cultural vacuum”. Art classes were not offered as part of the high school program, and original art was nowhere to be seen. I spent most of my young life immersed in academics, graduating from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. In 1990, I moved to the lower mainland of British Columbia.
It was after the birth of my first child in 1994 that my mother (an artistic soul) gave me a gift that would quickly change my life: a set of watercolors and an introductory course in painting. My mom knew that I would need to take time to develop my own interests while raising a family and running a business. Nothing was ever the same again as I began my artistic adventure.
In the beginning, I worked in watercolors, painting the misty landscapes of the hills surrounding my home in Maple Ridge, but I was feeling unsatisfied with the results. When I was first introduced to the deep vibrant colors of acrylics and the rich textures offered in mixed media, I knew I had found my artistic home.
Working primarily in acrylics now, I strive to create bold impressionistic works, often featuring crows, abstract landscapes and textural still life paintings. My love of history and literature is reflected in the mixed media used in many pieces: for this, I collect old books, newspapers, stamps and photos.
My fundamental goal as an artist is to capture the interest of a viewer and to evoke a strong physical reaction and emotional impression; a smile, a deep breath or even a thoughtful furrowed brow. I want the viewer to stop in their tracks to look and think about my work. I also believe that the title of each piece is often fundamental in guiding the viewer into the soul of my art; to reinforce the imprint that it was meant to leave.
“After all, art is not just about painting pretty pictures.
My intention…my goal, is always to make you feel
