Highlighting ROAM Gallery Artist
Adam Back - Mixed Media Artist
My work in mixed media attempts to cultivate visual possibilities from the everyday and mundane materials of life, sometimes the extraordinary and odd. It improvises on the world we have been given and on what we have made of it. The practices involved and the visual grammar generated aim at being allusive. They aim at adding to the wonder and mystery of the world while reflecting its brokenness in hopeful ways.
Working in mixed media generates in me an attentive love for the material world in new ways, looking everywhere for ideas and things to work with and making connections past what is readily apparent. My various mixed media practices inform how I see the medium—as a way of knowing and loving the world: experiencing it, sharing in it, and sharing in it with others. I want to create sensuous work that calls us back to the world that we have been gifted, that calls us back to the embodied life of creatures with senses.
The practices of mixed media are not only ways of knowing the world, but of participating in it. This means being attentive to the world and the materials I use. There is an interactive reciprocity at play between the world, the materials, the work, and how I, as one artist, pull bits of it all together.
